Self-Care for Remote Workers

What is Self-Care?

We have all had to adapt to a virtual world, and while many workplaces are seemingly reverting to their previous in-person environments, many workers are still working remotely or on a hybrid schedule. Many of us know that working from home isn’t just us sitting on the couch in comfy clothes waiting for a work task to be assigned. For some of us, we are working longer and harder than when we were in the office. Those who are working harder and longer feel they have no time for themselves anymore. Since they aren’t leaving their home for work, workers can have a hard time prioritizing and separating themselves from work.

As a manager, you must encourage your remote team members to proactively and consciously practice self-care.

There are many different things you can do to care for yourself to prevent from pouring from an “empty cup.”  Here are some practices to recommend to your virtual colleagues and direct reports:

1. Get more sleep

One of the best things you can do for your health, both mental and physical, is get more and better sleep. When we sleep, our body goes into recovery mode and recoups from everything that it experienced during the day. Our motivation levels typically tend to rely heavily on our energy levels, so the more you prioritize self-care practices, such as getting more sleep, the more motivated and energized you will be.

2. Do something you love

Carve out some time in your schedule for the things that you love. Whether it be walking your dog every day, going to the gym, or reading a book, make sure to prioritize time to do whatever it is you like to do.

3. Create a routine

It’s easy to work longer days than you did at the office because you no longer have a commute. To manage this reality, create a routine and stick to it. If your workday is done at 5 pm, set an alarm for 4:45 pm, finish what you’re working on, and call it a day. Go spend time with your family, friends, or whoever you like to relax with!

It’s no surprise that separating work from personal lives is much harder when we work from home. If you’re looking for some self-care tips as a remote worker, click here to listed to our podcast on the topic
